Naked 3 Makeup Looks

by Sarah

Hello beauties! As promised, I’ve been putting the Urban Decay Naked 3 palette to the test. To show the versatility of the palette, I did 3 looks from the most basic to the more intense. I’ve named them Barely Naked, Half Naked and All Out :)) Here’s a sneak peek at the looks before I move onto my thoughts on the palette and how I achieved these looks:

Naked 3

The colors in this palette are really pretty, in fact, if you’re looking for a romantic Valentine’s Day look, these blush and pink tones would help you create gorgeous variations. I only used the colors in this palette, no other brands or shades. ย I also used the double ended brush that the palette comes with for all the looks (cleaning it in between colors) and I really liked it. One end is flat to lay the color down, the other end is fluffy to blend it all out. It’s just my personal preference that I’m more drawn to earthy bronze and brown tones but I like that this palette still offers subtle neutral shades with a hint of color. The only downside of this palette – as with the previous Naked palettes is the lack of matte shades. There’s only 3 matte shades out of the 12 featured in this palette and the lighter ones called Strange and Limit were way too chalky for my NC35 skin tone, leaving me only with Nooner to use as a transition/blending color – which is not enough.ย Nevertheless, I would recommend this palette if you’re after soft, subtle and feminine shades with the quality we’ve come to expect from Urban Decay eyeshadows.

LOOK 1: BARELY NAKED

NAKED 3 COLORS: Dust, Burnout, Nooner

OTHER PRODUCTS: Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliner Demolition; Rimmel ScandalEyes eyeliner Nude; Lancome Hypnose Drama mascara Black; Shu Uemura eyelash curler

Place Dust on the inner corner of the eye, Burnout in the middle of the eyelid and Nooner on the outer half of the eyelid – blend the colors together until they merge seamlessly. You can intensify the shades as much as you like by layering the colors. Use Nooner to draw along the bottom lashline to create a soft shadow. With Urban Decay Demolition eyeliner (which is a dark matte brown), draw a line close to the upper lashline, slightly winging it upwards on the outer corner. Using the Rimmel Nude eyeliner, line inside the waterline for a bright-eyed look. Curl the lashes and apply 2 coats of black mascara.

LOOK 2: HALF NAKED

NAKED 3 COLORS: Burnout, Liar, Factory, Trick

OTHER PRODUCTS: Urban Decay 24/7 Eyeliner Zero, NYX Jumbo Pencil French Fries, Maybelline Master Precise Liquid liner Black, Lancome Hypnose Drama mascara Black, Ardell Half Accent lashes #301

Place Burnout on the inner corner of the eyelid, Liar in the middle and Factory on the outer corner. Blend the colors until they merge seamlessly. Using Urban Decay Zero eyeliner (which is a matte black), draw a line along the upper lashline extending the line to a wing. Using the color Factory, blend the wing portion of this line upwards until you achieve a soft transition. Again with the Zero eye pencil, draw a very thin line along the outer half of the bottom lashline. Go over this line with the color Trick. Use NYX jumbo pencil in French Fries to line inside the waterline. Coat both top and bottom lashes with black mascara; apply Ardell half accent lashes to the outer corner of each eye to elongate the eyes. Once dry, go over the top lashline with Maybelline Master precise liquid eyeliner in black.

LOOK 3: ALL OUT

NAKED 3 COLORS: Buzz, Nooner, Blackheart

OTHER PRODUCTS: Urban Decay 24/7 Eyeliner Rockstar, Maybelline Master Precise Liquid Liner Black, Lancome Hypnose Drama Black, Shu Uemura eyelash curler

Place Blackheart on the inner corner of the eye, Buzz in the middle and Nooner on the outer corner. Blend the colors until they merge seamlessly. Using Blackheart, go over Nooner on the outer corner until you achieve the desired intensity, keep blending. Line the bottom lashline with Blackheart. Line inside the waterline with Urban Decay eyeliner in Rockstar (which is a deep black/purple). Curl the lashes and apply 2-3 coats of mascara (or use false lashes). With your finger, dab the shimmery Buzz color to the middle of the eyelid to make this color pop. Draw a thin line along the upper lashline with Maybelline Master Precise liquid liner to finish off the look.

I hope these looks give you an idea as to how you can utilise the Naked 3 palette with looks ranging from the most subtle to the most intense, depending on your preference. I really enjoyed the Barely Naked look as it was clean with just enough shimmer and using the nude pencil in the waterline really brightened my eyes.

The 3 Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliners I used come in a pack named Triple Threat and you can get them HERE again using the codeย SCENT4U at checkout to receive 7 sample fragrance kit of your choice

Hi! I love your guides and when I tried them, I couldn’t get the colors to look as vibrant and luxurious as your’s looks. Any tips on getting richer colors?

Hi! Thank you for reaching out! There are 4 methods you can try to achieve stronger eyeshadow applications:
1. Prep the eyelids as you would your face. Applying a thin layer of concealer and setting with a light dusting of powder will even out the skin tone and have a stronger base for the colors to show up more
2. Use an eyelid primer. Again, just as step 1, eyelid primers help the eyeshadows adhere to the lids better. They also make the eyeshadows last longer
3. Use a cream base eyeshadow or eyeliner all over the eyelids first. A neutral-colored cream formula will help create a strong base for the eyeshadows without changing their true color
4. Pack the eyeshadows on with a flat brush or fingers first, and then blend it with a fluffy brush. This works particularly well with shimmer and metallic formula eyeshadows
I hope these tips help :)

I love all the looks, but not crazy about shimmer, do you know of a good flat pallet? I’m currently using Most wanted by Milani but would love other options

Makeup By Mario Master Mattes is a great all matte compact. Also Colourpop Gone Matte Palette has a wide variety of all matte shades :)

Hi Ginger, yes this palette would look amazing on redheads because it would give you that contrasting warm/orange and purple/pinks. If you add some chocolate brown matte shades in there – whether eyeshadow accents or eyeliner, it would really tie everything together ;)

Your choice of color and placement helped me so much! I have been wearing for along time just a couple shades at a time. My daughter got me to try this palette. I totally fell in love with the subtle look! It took me a couple of times but I did it I also added a different shade. If you can do a few other variations I would appreciate it! Thanks so much.

Hi Michelle! Thank you so much for sharing! I’m so happy to hear the tutorial helped you make the most of your palette. This tutorial of mine is a classic example of the basic techniques you can practice (in color placement) and switch the colors to your liking from there on.

Below is a link to my tutorial page to give you some ideas; as well as a post I recently did where you can use color bases for eyeshadows to completely transform them. This might also help you in discovering new ways of using your palette. Please let me know if you have any questions along the way :)

I like these looks but I like to add a transition color in the crease to tie everything together. Tonight for a small get-together I did the “All Out” look but I put “Factory” in the crease for a transition and lined the lower lashes with “blackout” and “darkside”. It turned out really nice.

Beautiful look, thank you so much! :)

I just don’t really understand – did you use different colours to ‘illustrate’ where to put the described shadows (as in the picture on the right, they are not shimmery at all…) – if yes, which colours did you use? (especially in the barely naked look these colours are so beautiful too…)

thank you :)

Petra

Hi Petra, yes the pictures on the right are illustrated just to represent where each color goes. I put the color info of each eyeshadow just underneath the main picture and detailed instructions.
With the Barely Naked look, I used the shadows: Dust, Burnout and Nooner. You can intensify the shimmer shadows by spraying your brush with some water which will make the shadow sparkle even more. Hope that helps :)

sarah, these looks are all great. Sadly i own one of the older UD palettes. I am such a great fan of neutrals & would love to try these looks using one of my neutral palettes. I do have a lot of trouble keeping these colors to show up as seperates. i normally end up with one blended mess by the end of the day. any tips that u can suggest would be helpful

Hi Sunita, before any eye look, it’s important to have a clean/even base. I always either cover my eye lids with concealer or an eye primer such as Urban Decay Primer Potion. This cancels out any redness or discoloration and allows the eyeshadows to show true to their actual color.

As for the blending, it’s all about placement of color. Achieving well blended looks takes some time and patience. Make sure to place the color where you want it, blend it out, and go back in again to re-build the color (depending on how intense you want it to be). Also, instead of blending the colors altogether, try to only blend the part where the different colors meet each other – right along the seam line. A detail blending brush such as Sigma E36 is great for this as it gives you more precision and control.

Please let me know if you have any other questions :) xx

Thank you for this!! I’ve had my Naked3 for over a year and absolutely love it, but haven’t been using it as much lately because many times the looks I was getting were just too much for every day on my really fair skin. I got the Naked basics for every day and I really like it, but I’ve been wanting to get back to the sparkle lol. I’m excited to whip it out to try Barely Naked, and the others too. I love how you came up with a foolproof way to go from day to night with ease, too. Thanks for the new and simple inspiration!!

Hi Laura, I’m glad the tutorial helped inspire you with your Naked 3 palette again :)
It’s quite a subtle palette so building up the colors makes a difference. You can also use the colors wet (spray your brushes with some water or MAC Fix+) or use an eyeshadow primer/base, these tricks will help intensify the colors and the shimmers too ;) xx

I am 50 years old and own both Naked and Naked 3 palettes. I have failed miserably at trying to do anything close to what you have shown above and today I tried the first look and it came out SO good! Obviously not as dark as yours, but I am going to experiment more and buy the MAC Paint Pot to see if that makes it pop. Thank you for making it so easy to understand and duplicate! You don’t know how excited I am to try all of your looks!

Hi Tina! Thank you so much for your amazing feedback. I can’t explain how happy it makes me that you enjoyed the tutorial. A good base for the shadows definitely makes a difference and you can always try to spray some water on your brush before applying shimmer shadows as this will also intensify the colors. Please let me know how you go and enjoy your looks which I’m sure will be gorgeous!! xx

These are gorgeous! I tried out the first one this morning, and though I do like what I ended up with, it’s nowhere near as pigmented as yours looks. I was wondering if you use any kind of base, or a tinted primer? I’ve been using the Lorac behind-the-scenes primer, but if there’s something better out there that can help the colors stand out like yours do, I’d love to know! :-)

Hi Catey, for some reason your comment came through in my latest post which is a different eye look so my apologies if you got a reply which didn’t make sense :)) For these looks, I used Urban Decay primer potion. If you’re finding the colors aren’t showing as much as you’d like, a great alternative is to use an opaque base such as a concealer or MAC paint pot. Layering the shadows by pressing the color onto the skin (rather than swiping motion) also helps build the intensity. Lastly, you can try to use the colors with a wet brush. I did a post on this trick which you can check out here: http://beautypointofview.com/quick-tip-dry-wet-eyeshadow-2/
I hope this helps; please let me know how you go :) xx

Oh, weird about it popping up on the wrong post! Thank you so much for the reply–I appreciate it and I will try some of these solutions! I don’t have any of the paint pots, but I do have a Maybelline color tattoo in a champagne-y color and a NYX base in white, so I might try those and see what happens :-) Thanks again!!

Are you using a primer? I tried one of these looks out this morning and it came out really light. I love this pallete cause I like the pink colors and earth tones but I’m trying to get the looks in doing to come out more pigmented if that makes sense lol

Hi Ashley, yes I used Urban Decay eye primer to prep my eyes. Primers really help the eyeshadows adhere and stay on longer. You can also use an eyeshadow base such as MAC paint pot in Painterly or Soft Ocre which are opaque (like concealers) and show off the eyeshadow colors beautifully. Lastly, you can use the colors with a wet brush for intense pigment pay-off. I did a post on this trick which you can check out here: http://beautypointofview.com/quick-tip-dry-wet-eyeshadow-2/ Let me know how you go ;) xx
