Kevyn Aucoin

March 2, 2015

I was interested in the creative process of arts and makeup in particular from a very young age. I remember watching my mother put on her makeup and carefully observing all her colorful pencils and eyeshadows and impatiently waiting for the day I could get my hands on them. That said, I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup til I was 17 but it never stopped me from drawing my creations on paper…these days on professional makeup terms we call them “face charts” :)

It wasn’t however, until I discovered the creative genius that was Kevyn Aucoin that I knew makeup was what I was meant to do on a professional level.

Kevyn Aucoin was a young makeup artist who literally transformed makeup as we know it today. Using techniques from old Hollywood film sets and combining them with edgy modern day looks, Kevyn Aucoin was a visionary way ahead of his time. He worked with supermodels of the 90s, singers from Janet Jackson to Diana Ross to Tina Turner, actresses from Julia Roberts to Gwyneth Paltrow and the list goes on.

Unfortunately (and I still say this with a heavy heart) Kevyn passed away from a rare brain tumor in 2002 at age 40.

He was and still is my mentor and inspiration for why I started in this industry and I still look through his books for ideas. The whole contouring and highlighting craze we’ve been seeing in the past couple of years is what Kevyn was famous for and if you’re interested in makeup, especially on a professional level, I highly recommend you add Kevyn’s books to your collection as they’re practically “makeup bibles”.

Below are some of Kevyn’s incredible work and most are featured in his books with step by step instructions on techniques he uses; *see if you can pick out the actual celebrity before reading the captions:

Before he passed away, Kevyn was working on releasing his own cosmetics line. Although I often wonder how much better the makeup industry would be today if he had lived on, I’m glad his legacy continued on by people close to him, who shared his vision. Kevyn Aucoin Cosmetics is one of the most highly regarded cosmetics brands with every single product within their line to be of utmost quality. And I’m happy to announce the Kevyn Aucoin line is now available at Sephora, which makes it even easier for a wider audience of consumers to experience and enjoy.

Another amazing post! I love seeing new posts from you on my email alerts cos I know there will be something interesting again. I can’t believe the Marilyn Monroe picture is Lisa Marie Presley. That’s crazy!

Thank you Emily, glad to have you follow the blog; your feedback means the world to me :) These are only some of the pictures I could share of Kevyn’s work. If you ever see his books at Sephora or bookstores, have a look through the other transformations too. They’re incredible ;) xx

Oh and Amber Valetta is the bomb, she starred in my favorite tv series Revenge. She was killed off but mysteriously returned to again be sent packing, her character was great and she can actually act! : )

I never knew that about Kevyn. I have seen some of the products here and there but not knowing anything about the brand I just kept moving along. But now because of you sharing all the love, I will stop and take a second look at the line. What talent…and loss of an artist! Thanks for sharing Sarah, your the best! : )

Thanks Trisha! Yes I often wonder how different the industry would be if he’d lived on – and I’m sure it would be different. I would highly recommend the Sensual Skin Enhancer and his contouring and highlighting powders, they’re amazing. I started watching Revenge when it first started but I get so little time for TV and I got hooked on Suits shortly after and stuck with that. I agree, Amber Valetta is stunning! She’s so statuesque and natural looking.
