Best Mascara I Have Ever Used: Lancome Hypnose Drama

May 5, 2014

Those of you following my blog for some time would know that I’m an absolute lash freak! The answer to the cliche question: “if you could only have one makeup product, what would it be?” is hands down mascara for me.

In my quest of finding “the one” and spending hundreds of dollars on pretty much every drugstore and high-end mascara known to woman kind, I’ve finally found what has become a staple in my makeup kit for the past 5 years…Lancome Hypnose Drama!

Alhough I still stray and try other options as new mascaras are released, my love affair with Hypnose Drama continues as no other has even come close yet…

Lancome Hypnose Drama Mascara

Being extremely particular and fussy about lashes, what I look for in a mascara is: lots of volume, length, curl that holds, good color pay-off, no clumping, no flaking, buildable and if possible…I want all this to be done with one coat. Not too bad right?? :))

As per the below Before & After, here’s why Hypnose Drama ticks all the boxes:

On the left, there’s nothing on my eyes – no mascara, no liner, now eyeshadow etc; On the right is “only” 1 coat of Lancome Hypnose Drama

The reason I only used “1 coat” was to show you the dramatic volume, length and contrast this mascara provides. The formula is creamy, glossy and color payoff is great. It’s also easily buildable without clumping or flaking.

The brush of the Hypnose Drama mascara is also quite unique, which really helps hug and coat the lashes. It has a curved, almost “S” shape and the bristles are firm enough to comb through and coat each lash. It really does highlight the tiniest of lashes you won’t even know you had.

Most of the time, coupled with a soft eyeliner or eyeshadow, this one coat is what I wear for my everyday look. For heavier eye makeup looks, I build the product up by 2-3 coats, and usually this provides plenty of volume that I don’t even feel the need to wear false lashes.

Lancome Hypnose Drama mascara comes in original and waterproof formulas. I have both formulas and they both do the same thing.

**I personally prefer the waterproof formula as my lashes are very stubborn and don’t hold curl as well as I would like. Waterproof formulas in general are best at combatting this problem as they set the lashes in place – especially after using an eyelash curler.

MASCARA TRICK TO AVOID CLUMPING and FLAKING

Most times, we take the mascara brush straight out of the tube and onto the lashes. What this does is distribute way too much product making the lashes stick together and also weigh them down.

Another disadvantage is, when you have too much product on the lashes, it starts to crumble and flake after it dries.

You may have heard the mascara trick of wiping off the excess product on a tissue before applying it to the lashes. I find this to be a complete waste of product! Instead, here’s what I usually do:

Scrape the brush against the mouth of the mascara tube until the bulk of the product is off the brush and back in the tube.

This cleans the brush from excess product, but still leaves the product in the tube for next time – as pictured.

When you apply that very first coat with a cleaner brush, you distribute just enough product over each lash without any excess or clumpy mess.

Once the first coat is semi-dry, you can then continue to build more volume.

Just continue to wipe the mascara wand against the excess product in the tube, picking up just enough product to lightly coat the bristles and again…leaving the excess in the tube.

Repeat this process to apply as many coats as needed to achieve the look you desire.

*As with any makeup product, it’s always best to start light and build up, than to try and tone it down. This mascara trick helps slowly build length and volume ;)

Lancome Hypnose Drama mascaras retail at $27.50 and I find Nordstrom usually has the best deals, as they almost always have “gift with purchase” or Set options.

I ordered three full-size tubes for the price of $50 on HSN. I love your blog and it helped me make my decision to order. I’d been using Definicils for years and hope the Hypnose works just as well or better

Hi Inas, as the name suggests water-proof mascaras don’t budge with water; so if you want to continue removing your mascara with water, you would need the regular version. The formula works exactly the same in terms of providing volume and length.

Hi Sydney, sending you and your roomie a ‘cyber high five’ in Hypnose mascara unison ;) I tried They’re Real and I loved the volume and the formula but it weighed my lashes down :( which is always a problem for me though so I can’t blame the mascara too much. Maybe I should have tried the waterproof formula. xx

Great tip! I always hated wiping the brush on a tissue, you lose so much product and tissue gets stuck on the bristles. I’m gonna try this now. Thank you!!

I agree Helen. I know mascaras have a short shelf life but all the product I scraped into the tube in the photo above would have gone to trash if wiped on a tissue. Some mascaras are so expensive, it really is a waste. Let me know how this trick works for you ;) xx
