Becca Shimmering Skin Perfectors

by Sarah

Hi beauties! I’m particularly excited about today’s post as I’m such a sucker for highlighters…especially Becca highlighters. Today I’ll go through the pressed powder and liquid formulas in the shades that I absolutely adore and also give you plenty of swatches so you can decide if these products areΒ right for you too…

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfectors

Back in the day, when contouring and highlighting wasn’t as mainstream as it is today,Β we, makeup artists would utilise everything from frosty eyeshadows to vaseline to give the skin that dewy/healthy glow – (how times and products have changed!). So you can imagine my excitement when Becca released their first line of liquid highlighters rightly named:Β Shimmering Skin Perfectors…and we’ve been inseparable since.

I’ve used the liquid formula (Opal shade in particular)Β for years and it’s an absolute staple in my makeup kit. When Becca finally released powder versions of these amazing highlighters, of course I had to have them too :)

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfectors – Liquid Formula

Get itΒ HEREΒ

Becca Shimmering Skin PerfectorsWhat still sets Becca liquid highlighters aside from the rest of the formulas I’ve tried is the consistency and finish. The light lotion feel of the product blends evenly and dries up without leaving a patchy residue behind.

The selling point however is the shimmer factor. ItΒ containsΒ the most beautiful finely-milled shimmer throughout that it leaves the skin glowing! No chunky glitters, sparkles or that oily look.

I have the shades Opal (champagne/beige) and Topaz (bronze). Although I use Topaz when I have a tan or as a blush for when I want a bronzed look, Opal has been (and still is) my all time favorite Becca highlighter shade. I wear it all over the face for a quick healthy glow or dab it over the top of my cheekbones for an instant pick-me up. You can alsoΒ mix it with your foundations to turn them into dewy formulas.

The 1.7oz bottles come with a pump and you only need the tiniest amount which also makes the product last for…well…pretty much years!

Another advantage of the liquid formula is that it’s hydrating without feeling oily. If you’re concerned aboutΒ uneven skin texture, mature skin, wrinkles and worry thatΒ using shimmer products will highlight these concerns, this liquid formula eliminates suchΒ problems. If anything, the dewy finish gives the skin a plump look and attracts light to all the right areas.

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfectors

How gorgeous is that glow! It seriously changes your skin in an instant and it certainly deserves its title of Skin Perfector.Β This line of shimmering skin perfectors come in 5 shades: Pearl (frosty white); Moonstone (pale gold); Opal (champagne); Topaz (bronze)Β andΒ Rose Gold.

*I often get asked about the difference between Moonstone and Opal. Although Moonstone is described as “pale gold”, I still find it cooler and more frosty than the Opal. These products contain reflective pigments meaning they’re designed to attract light. As you can see from the swatches too, they look so much lighter when blended. So unless you have really pale skin tone where the frostier look of Moonstone is more appealing to you, I would recommend Opal all the way.

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfectors – Pressed Powder Formula

Get itΒ HERE

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed

Before I get to the formula of the pressed powders, how pretty is the Becca packaging! Β With a metal disc embossed with the Becca name and a soft rubbery container surrounding it, it looks and feels so unique.

The pressed powder highlighters were released after the hype of the liquid formulas and I’m so glad we have this option now. Some people prefer powder formulas to liquid and I must admit taking the powder compact with me when travelling is much more convenient than the bottles.

The formula, as with the liquid options, is perfection! Again, the shimmers are so finely milled that the powder glides over the skin like silk. There’s no patchiness, no chunky glitters or shimmer and only a little amount is needed to achieve a smooth glowing look.

I have the shade Opal and recently purchased Rose Gold for a pop of color on the cheeks. And I must say…this color is sooo pretty! It adds color as well as highlight soΒ it gives perfect dimensionΒ to the cheeks with one swipe.

The pressed formulas come in 4 shades: Moonstone, Opal, Topaz and Rose Gold. *There’s also a yellow Gold that was released some time ago but I’m not sure if it will be a part of their permanent collection as yet.

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed - Opal & Rose GoldBecca Opal & TopazΒ powder blended (on NC35 skin tone; natural daylight)

As with the liquid version, I love the shade Opal for highlight and I’m really enjoying the Rose Gold as a blush/highlight. I’ve been tempted to get Topaz for a more bronze shade, however it was moreΒ intense than the liquid formula and too much for my NC35 skin. If you have deeper/darker skin tone and like a hint of golden/bronze highlight, Topaz would be a great option for you.

*If like me, you’re after a subtle bronze highlighter (a shade between Opal and Topaz), try Girlactik’s Face Glow in Bronze. The powder formula is just as stunning as Becca and the color is perfect. Check out my full review and swatch of Girlactik Bronze here

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector

And here’s a side by side comparison of Opal Pressed and Opal Liquid formulas. I find the pressed version contains a hint more gold whereas the liquid formula is slightly more champagne. However, this difference is only apparent when compared side by side and doesn’t effect the overall finish on the skin.

There are so many types of highlighting products as every brand has their own version now. There are some serious contenders to Becca highlighters – with The Balm Cosmetics ‘Mary-Lou Manizer’ being a very popular one. In factΒ I get a lot of questions about how similar they are and which brand/formula I prefer over the other. So, I went one step further andΒ swatched them both to show you…

Becca Opal vs Mary-Lou Manizer

The most obvious difference between the two highlighters is color. Although the undertone of both highlighters is a champagne/beige, The Balm’s Mary-Lou Manizer is slightly more frosty whereas the Opal has a bit more warmth to it. Texture wise they feel pretty much the same but as I’ve been using The Balm, I notice little bumps of product collecting on the surface whereas Becca has been consistently smooth. I like both products and The Balm also comes in different shades but…I’m a Becca girl deep down ;)

Have you tried any of the Becca products? What’s your all time favorite highlighter? xx

Hi Pooja, in terms of texture, powder formula would probably work better for oily skin. As for color, Rose Gold is beautiful but it definitely has a pink undertone so it can double up as blush. Depending on the depth of your skin tone, you can also consider Topaz which is a bronze with hints of gold. It looks stunning on darker skin tones. Or if you’re after a traditional highlighter, the color Champagne Pop is a universal shade which looks beautiful lightly dusted over the high points of the cheeks. It all depends on whether you’re after a highlight, or something that will provide a pop of color with a hint of shimmer through it. Let me know if you have any other questions :)

I’ve tried the Becca glow on the go kit in opal, and I think I like the skin enhancer more than I like the pressed powder. Both are gorgeous! I just loved the liquid one a liiitttllee bit more. I’m trying to decided whether I should buy champagne pop in the pressed powder or skin enhancer now too haha :)

Love your review!

Thanks Natalie. I know what you mean. I slightly lean towards the liquid formula too, especially that I can wear it on its own or mix it in with my foundations which is quite versatile. Champagne pop is a beautiful color. Let me know what you decide on :)

Hi! Do you actually use the pressed on top of the liquid?

If I want the highlight to be more intense and noticeable then yes I use pressed on top of the liquid. This helps intensify the highlight. I apply the liquid, let it settle into my skin for a few minutes and dust some of the pressed highlighter over it :)

Hi. I have quite pale skin. I’m an nc15 or nc20 in Mac. Would you recommend moonstone over the opal shade for me? I like the liquid off the powder I think .

Hi Ashley, I would recommend Moonstone as the Opal is much warmer and can throw off a peachy undertone against lighter skin. You could also consider Pearl which is more of a frosty white shade but it’s more sheer than the other colors so you get the soft shimmer without any color payoff.

I love both the powder and liquid formulas but I like the versatility of the liquid as you can mix it into your foundations or wear all over the face for a healthy glow. Hope this helps your decision :)

thank you for comparing Mary-Lou Manizer and Opal! I have Mary-Lou Manizer and I have been considering trying Opal but it’s definitely more pricey

Hi Natalye, they’re both absolutely beautiful. If you already have Mary Lou Manizer, I think you’ll find Opal to be very similar (as seen in the swatches too). You could however consider Becca’s new Champagne Pop highlighter which is different in tone to both Mary Lou Manizer and Opal. It’s limited edition but it’ll last you a very long time :)

Thank you for the info I actually got confused between the above products. However I can’t decide whether to buy Opal or the new limited edition, Champagne Pop. My skintone is tan with a bit of yellow. Asian skintone. What do you think?

Hi Emilia, Opal and Champagne Pop are very similar, except Champagne Pop is slightly more golden and definitely more shimmery. Color wise, either of them will be suitable for your skin tone; you just have to decide on the shimmer factor.
I personally prefer Opal as it’s more subtle yet I can still build up the intensity. Just gives me more control. Also, Opal is a permanent product and comes in liquid, powder and cream formulas too.
Hope this helps your decision :)

This is great! I’ve wanted the Opal powder highlighter ever since I got my makeup done at sephora and the MUA used it on me. But now after reading your review, I want the Topaz liquid form, too! I’d probably use it as a bronzer or just on my cheeks; how do you apply the liquid form? With your hands or a brush? I currently wear a liquid matte foundation and apply that with a beauty blender.

Thanks again for your awesome review!

Hi Amanda, I find dabbing the liquid formula with my fingers works best but my second alternative would definitely be the beauty blender. Topaz is a beautiful bronze and you only need a tiny amount. Becca just released cream formulas of these highlighters too if you prefer compacts. I did a post on these new releases if you wanna check it out: http://beautypointofview.com/becca-new-releases-2015/
Have a great weekend!! xx

I do not own any Becca products, but after reading this review, I think I will start! I absolutely love the finish the liquid skin perfectors are giving. Unfortunately, for daytime use, I wear bareminerals original foundation. I’m guessing the pressed powder would be the better alternative with a powder-based foundation.

If I use a liquid foundation to mix with the Becca liquid skin perfector, what brand would you recommend Sarah?

Hi Sydney, you can actually use the Becca liquid formula over powder foundation. You just need a very small amount and lightly tap over the skin with your fingers to distribute the product (rather than swiping it). This will prevent the powder from moving or getting streaky. As for foundations, a matte to semi-matte, oil-free formula works best with this highlighter. Nars Sheer Matte or Loreal True Match are good options. I find half a pump of highlighter to one pump of foundation works best. Hope you enjoy your first Becca highlighter!! ;) xx

This is by far the most informative review I’ve seen on the Becca highlighters! You never disappoint Sarah. Thanks for comparing the opal to maryloumanizer too cos I always heard about how similar they were but never saw a review comparing them. I think I’m gonna get the rose gold too. I never realised how pretty it was! Thank you again! (:

Yeah….!! You are so wonderful Sarah, thank you so much for this review. I was so waiting for it as I wasn’t sure what Becca skin finish to purchase. I am now going to get the Opal color in the liquid formula. Thank you again for your thorough review, loved it!

They are very beautiful! Do you feel that they’re useful for all ages, or might there be a cut off to where they aren’t appropriate for someone over a certain age?

Hi Jeanette, this is one of the reasons why I love Becca highlighters so much – the formula is so fine and silky that it doesn’t look cakey or magnify problem areas on the skin. The liquid formula in particular is quite hydrating so it gives the skin a plump look which I recommend to my clients with mature or textured skin (acne/scars). They’re also available in travel size so you can try and see how you like them before committing to the full size bottle. If you prefer the powder formula but worried that it might highlight problem areas, all you need to do is spray a light mist of either water, MAC Fix+ or your favorite toner over the top. This will settle the product and give the skin a smooth, dewy finish ;) xx
