Becca Shimmering Skin Perfectors

Hi beauties! I’m particularly excited about today’s post as I’m such a sucker for highlighters…especially Becca highlighters. Today I’ll go through the pressed powder and liquid formulas in the shades that I absolutely adore and also give you plenty of swatches so you can decide if these products are right for you too…

Back in the day, when contouring and highlighting wasn’t as mainstream as it is today, we, makeup artists would utilise everything from frosty eyeshadows to vaseline to give the skin that dewy/healthy glow – (how times and products have changed!). So you can imagine my excitement when Becca released their first line of liquid highlighters rightly named: Shimmering Skin Perfectors…and we’ve been inseparable since.

I’ve used the liquid formula (Opal shade in particular) for years and it’s an absolute staple in my makeup kit. When Becca finally released powder versions of these amazing highlighters, of course I had to have them too :)

What still sets Becca liquid highlighters aside from the rest of the formulas I’ve tried is the consistency and finish. The light lotion feel of the product blends evenly and dries up without leaving a patchy residue behind.

The selling point however is the shimmer factor. It contains the most beautiful finely-milled shimmer throughout that it leaves the skin glowing! No chunky glitters, sparkles or that oily look.

I have the shades Opal (champagne/beige) and Topaz (bronze). Although I use Topaz when I have a tan or as a blush for when I want a bronzed look, Opal has been (and still is) my all time favorite Becca highlighter shade. I wear it all over the face for a quick healthy glow or dab it over the top of my cheekbones for an instant pick-me up. You can also mix it with your foundations to turn them into dewy formulas.

The 1.7oz bottles come with a pump and you only need the tiniest amount which also makes the product last for…well…pretty much years!

Another advantage of the liquid formula is that it’s hydrating without feeling oily. If you’re concerned about uneven skin texture, mature skin, wrinkles and worry that using shimmer products will highlight these concerns, this liquid formula eliminates such problems. If anything, the dewy finish gives the skin a plump look and attracts light to all the right areas.

How gorgeous is that glow! It seriously changes your skin in an instant and it certainly deserves its title of Skin Perfector. This line of shimmering skin perfectors come in 5 shades: Pearl (frosty white); Moonstone (pale gold); Opal (champagne); Topaz (bronze) and Rose Gold.

*I often get asked about the difference between Moonstone and Opal. Although Moonstone is described as “pale gold”, I still find it cooler and more frosty than the Opal. These products contain reflective pigments meaning they’re designed to attract light. As you can see from the swatches too, they look so much lighter when blended. So unless you have really pale skin tone where the frostier look of Moonstone is more appealing to you, I would recommend Opal all the way.

Before I get to the formula of the pressed powders, how pretty is the Becca packaging!  With a metal disc embossed with the Becca name and a soft rubbery container surrounding it, it looks and feels so unique.

The pressed powder highlighters were released after the hype of the liquid formulas and I’m so glad we have this option now. Some people prefer powder formulas to liquid and I must admit taking the powder compact with me when travelling is much more convenient than the bottles.

The formula, as with the liquid options, is perfection! Again, the shimmers are so finely milled that the powder glides over the skin like silk. There’s no patchiness, no chunky glitters or shimmer and only a little amount is needed to achieve a smooth glowing look.

I have the shade Opal and recently purchased Rose Gold for a pop of color on the cheeks. And I must say…this color is sooo pretty! It adds color as well as highlight so it gives perfect dimension to the cheeks with one swipe.

The pressed formulas come in 4 shades: Moonstone, Opal, Topaz and Rose Gold. *There’s also a yellow Gold that was released some time ago but I’m not sure if it will be a part of their permanent collection as yet.

As with the liquid version, I love the shade Opal for highlight and I’m really enjoying the Rose Gold as a blush/highlight. I’ve been tempted to get Topaz for a more bronze shade, however it was more intense than the liquid formula and too much for my NC35 skin. If you have deeper/darker skin tone and like a hint of golden/bronze highlight, Topaz would be a great option for you.

And here’s a side by side comparison of Opal Pressed and Opal Liquid formulas. I find the pressed version contains a hint more gold whereas the liquid formula is slightly more champagne. However, this difference is only apparent when compared side by side and doesn’t effect the overall finish on the skin.

There are so many types of highlighting products as every brand has their own version now. There are some serious contenders to Becca highlighters – with The Balm Cosmetics ‘Mary-Lou Manizer’ being a very popular one. In fact I get a lot of questions about how similar they are and which brand/formula I prefer over the other. So, I went one step further and swatched them both to show you…

The most obvious difference between the two highlighters is color. Although the undertone of both highlighters is a champagne/beige, The Balm’s Mary-Lou Manizer is slightly more frosty whereas the Opal has a bit more warmth to it. Texture wise they feel pretty much the same but as I’ve been using The Balm, I notice little bumps of product collecting on the surface whereas Becca has been consistently smooth. I like both products and The Balm also comes in different shades but…I’m a Becca girl deep down ;)
