Your Artis Brush Questions Answered

April 15, 2016

Hello beauties!! I covered Artis makeup brushes in detail on previous posts, and with the hype continuing to surround them, they’re still one of the most asked about items on my site.

Today, I thought I’d answer some of your frequently asked questions and also introduce you to the Fluenta Collection, which takes these already luxurious brushes to a whole other level.

Before we get started, here are the links to my previous posts: Artis Brushes Introduction and Elite Smoke Collection which cover everything from background info, quality and performance, different size and styles, where and how to use each brush, as well as size comparisons.

YOUR FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Are the cheaper alternatives same as Artis brushes?

NO they’re not. This is one topic I want to clarify in detail as I’ve been seeing so many different “dupes” pop up all over social media. The problem is: people buy the dupes expecting the Artis performance they’ve been hearing about; of course it all goes belly up because it’s like comparing apples and oranges; and unfairly, they end up putting the Artis brushes in the same “fail” basket which couldn’t be further from the truth.

Artis Cosmefibre bristlesWhilst imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery – and clearly Artis have a great product that everyone else wants in on the success; when it comes to performance, they can’t even be compared. And there’s a good reason for that:

More so than the unique design, what makes Artis brushes different are their bristles. Artis brushes are made from Cosmefibre (in the US), which in fact is exclusive to Artis. These bristles are designed and packed in such a way to practically mimic airbrushing so whatever product you apply with them is at its utmost performance. This is where most of the dupes fail and lets be honest, what’s the point of having a unique looking makeup brush if it doesn’t perform?

Another important function of these bristles is that they don’t soak up any product so you not only use less product, but cleaning them is an absolute breeze.

I understand Artis brushes can be expensive but when it comes to makeup application, performance is key and Artis delivers performance. I would highly recommend in investing in a few key pieces to begin with and enjoy the guaranteed results, rather than wasting money on countless dupes in the hope of finding one that works as well as the real thing.

OVAL 7 or OVAL 8 for foundation?

Artis Oval 8 ad Oval 7 brushesPossibly the most asked about Artis question. Oval 7 was a later addition to the Artis line. Slightly smaller than the Oval 8, if I personally had to choose one, Oval 7 would be my preference.

Oval 8 is amazing for base products such as foundation and powder. It provides a very quick and effortless coverage so it’s convenient.

Oval 7 does all of the above but being smaller, it can also be used to apply bronzer, blush, contour and highlight with better precision.

Both brushes are amazing for foundation, but depending on your makeup routine and needs, Oval 7 is a bit more versatile.

What are the key brushes I should consider buying?

Artis Must Have EssentialsArtis has some amazing sets which are great value for money, so whether you consider one of those sets or prefer individual brushes, following three are my personal must-haves:

Oval 7 for primer, foundation, powder, bronzer, blush, contour, highlight

Oval 4 for concealer, contour, eyeshadow

Linear 1 for eyeliner, contour and brows

*Because Artis brushes are so easy to clean in between products, same brush can be used for many different functions within the same application so you don’t even need multiples of these favorites.

Can I purchase Artis brushes in my country?

Yes. As with all international shipping, restrictions and limitations may apply, however SpaceNK and Net-A-Porter both stock Artis brushes and ship international. Check both stores to see availability and terms and conditions for your location.

THE FLUENTA COLLECTION

I must admit, when I first discovered Artis brushes, I was particularly drawn to the Fluenta Collection. With black and silver handles, the elegant curve of the brush heads, they almost looked like art pieces. Upon their first release, they were only sold at Neimann Marcus so availability was a bit limited. Now, the Fluenta line is available on the Artis website and now that I have a set of my own, they look even better in person!

Fluenta Series feature the exact same brush size/styles as the other collections. The only difference is the color and style of the handle – which has a prominent curve towards the head of the brush; so it’s really a matter of personal preference rather than difference in variety/functionality. I haven’t experienced any difference by way of performance.

I’ve had nothing but positive experiences with Artis – both in terms of product quality/performance and the Artis team as a whole. I’m happy to see the range rapidly growing and reaching the hype and success it truly deserves. Along with the Elite Mirror, Elite Smoke and Fluenta Collections, Artis recently launched the Elite Gold Collection which looks soooo beautiful!!

I think my life will be complete if a blushing rose-gold collection is launched so I shall patiently wait and hope the Artis design team make my wishes come true :)

Have you purchased any of the Artis brushes? Which color/style is your favorite?

Hi! Do you use the artis cleaner to clean your brushes? Or do you have a cheaper alternative? Thanks!

Hi Lauren, I use the Artis foam cleanser in between applications as it’s really convenient. However, for regular wash/deep cleanse I use Dr Bronner’s magic soap. It literally melts off any makeup, it’s gentle on the bristles and super affordable too. I have a detailed review on them if you’re interested: http://beautypointofview.com/dr-bronner/
Hope that helps :)

Hi. Is there any difference between the elite smoke and be elite mirror other than the color? I noticed on the Artis brush site they have a chart for each brush and what you can use it for. With the oval 8 elite smoke they have foundation and bronzer listed, but with the oval 8 elite mirror they have foundation, bronzer + powder and skin care products.

Thank you for your review about these nice brushes.
I have a question. Do you personally prefer the “fluenta collection” or the original collection (including the smoke collection) more? I mean especially in use?

Hi Eva, in terms of performance there’s no difference between the styles. Sizes and bristles are exactly the same.
As stunning as the Fluenta range is, personally, I reach for my original (elite mirror or smoke) collection more.
The fluenta style brushes have a bigger/chunkier head and sometimes with the smaller brushes (especially when doing detailed eye makeup or liner), I find it can obscure the view. I feel I can judge where I place the brush and product better with the original collection. I hope that makes sense :)
Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Great post. I keep seeing the dupes everywhere too but the reviews are always mixed. Some complain their brushes soak up too much product or application is streaky. I didn’t know about the Artis bristles. It makes more sense now and I’d rather pay extra and get the originals. I want oval 7 for sure and which eye set would you recommend? Thank you, love your blog (:

Thanks Sienna. Yes I had similar issues with the dupes I tried also. Apart from the scratchy feel of the bristles, which is not good for the skin for such densely packed brushes, they guzzle up a ton of product. I agree with you, some things I’d rather pay a bit more and have good results :) Thank you for your feedback!

A friend and I were recently discussing the days when we didn’t use brushes to apply makeup. What were we thinking?!!!! These brushes not only sound amazing but look soooo beautiful too. Thanks for the great information

Hi Sarah Thanks for this information and you’re right about the cheaper brushes. I bought one of the dupe brushes online. It was similar size to oval6. The bristles felt really scratchy on the skin, it didn’t blend very well and the handle was very weak like it was gonna break. I just couldn’t use it. Since then t bought the Artis oval8, oval6 and liner1 and the difference is crazy. Well worth every penny.

Hi Jessica, I had the exact same experience with quite a few dupes which is why I felt the need to point out the bristles make a world of difference. Glad you’re enjoying your brushes :)
